Happy Valentine’s day!

“Roses are red, violets are blue, and I’ll never be blue while I have you”, orates this loving verse fitting the occasion: Valentine’s Day. This ultimate cliché has been altered in so many ways over the centuries that Sir Edmund Spencer would no longer come upon the virtues of temperance, chastity, friendship or courtesy that once The Faery Queen Elisabeth I  was reckon to have been blessed with. The original line “She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew, And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forest grew” has been completely transformed and became, among the millions of love poems, the most popular one.

It’s surely common to compare our beloved one with a beautiful flower, so we take great satisfaction from making this type of rhyme on February 14th. Since so many words rhyme with ‘blue’, there are endless possibilities even for non-poets to create fantastic poetry. It also bears symbolism, for instance roses are flowers that define and express love universally. Red is often considered the colour of love, whereas violet is the colour that represents constancy, simplicity, modesty, and humanity.

But what about those people who feel Valentine’s Day is an annoying and unnecessary commercial celebration?

If we exceed the number of the flowers, red heart balloons, pink heart patterns, teddy bears, chocolate, etc., and all that money can buy, we may discover an intersection of love and romance that must be separated. Because romance should not serve as a barrier to love. Love can and should be embraced beyond the confines and perspectives of those who see Valentine’s Day solely as a celebration of romantic relationships. Instead, the holiday can be viewed as an exaltation of love in all areas of life. Promoted as part of our daily routine, the day dedicated to love must include the love we give and receive from ourselves.

It’s time to reconsider this holiday as more than just a romantic relationship, but as a celebration of love for all people, whether alone, with a partner, with a friend, in between, or days later with half-priced chocolate. This day should and could be about doing what we actually love and in the way we truly enjoy it. We can benefit from this great day by buying ourselves flowers or balloons, pampering ourselves or someone else, or telling someone we love and appreciate them! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
